[Call/WhatsApp: 9999702036] Welcome to SCC1970's Guide! Today, we are going to read and explore "The Lotus". To help you understand the core themes of poem, this comprehensive summary has been prepared specifically for your quick reference and study. Let's dive into the fascinating world of nature...!
The poem describes a legendary conflict in the world of nature. Cupid, the God of Love, goes to Flora, the Goddess of Flowers, asking her to choose a flower that would easily be recognized as the supreme queen of the garden. For a long time, the Rose and the Lily had been fierce rivals for this crown, with different poets arguing for each. The Lily was praised for its tall, royal stature, while the Rose was loved for its sweet fragrance and vibrant beauty.
When Flora asks Love what color the queenly flower should be, Love is confused. He first chooses "rose-red," then changes his mind to "lily-white," and finally asks for a combination of both. Flora resolves the dispute beautifully by creating the Lotus. The Lotus is dyed with both the passion of the rose-red and the purity of the lily-white, making it the most majestic flower that blooms.
The poet of this poem, Toru Dutt did not write this just to tell a story about flowers. She wrote it with two very important purposes:
To Celebrate Indian Culture: By making the Lotus win the contest over the Rose and the Lily, she proudly establishes that the Lotus—which is deeply sacred in Indian culture—is superior to traditional Western flowers.
The Concept of Balance: The poem teaches us that true perfection comes from balancing different qualities (like the rose's beauty and the lily's dignity) together.
