Question (2/20)

Direction for Questions (1 to 5):-

Read the passage carefully and answer the questions that follows:

Biodiversity, the variety of life on Earth, encompasses the diversity within species, between species and of ecosystems. It is the foundation of ecosystem services that sustain human life and well-being. Biodiversity ensures natural sustainability for all life forms by providing critical services such as pollination, nutrient cycling and climate regulation. However, human activities have significantly impacted biodiversity, leading to habitat destruction, pollution, overexploitation and climate change. These activities have accelerated the rate of species extinction to unprecedented levels, threatening the stability of ecosystems.

The loss of biodiversity has far-reaching consequences. For instance, the decline in pollinator populations, such as bees and butterflies, affects food production and security. Similarly, the destruction of wetlands reduces their ability to filter water and mitigate floods. The interconnectedness of species means that the extinction of one species can trigger a cascade of negative effects on others. Conservation efforts are crucial to preserving biodiversity. Protected areas, sustainable practices and restoration projects are some of the strategies employed to mitigate biodiversity loss. Additionally, international agreements like the Convention on Biological Diversity aim to promote global cooperation in biodiversity conservation.

Understanding the importance of biodiversity and taking action to protect it is essential for maintaining the health of our planet. Each species, no matter how small, plays a role in the intricate web of life. By safeguarding biodiversity, we ensure the resilience of ecosystems and the continued provision of ecosystem services that are vital for human survival.
