Although we often used them interchangeably, these terms have distinct meanings and applications. Understanding the distinct roles of numeration, notation and numerals helps clarify mathematical communication and improves problem-solving efficiency.


What is a Numeral?
According to Cambridge dictionary, numeral means, "a symbol that represents a number"A numeral is the actual symbolic representation of a number in written form. Different numerals exist across various number systems to express numerical values in different cultures and applications. Numerals play a fundamental role in recording and utilizing numbers in practical applications. For example:
1. Hindu-Arabic Numerals– consists standard digits 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9.

2. Roman Numerals– consists I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, X, XV, L, etc.



What is Notation?
According to oxford dictionary, notation means, "a system of symbols that represent information, especially in mathematics, science and music". Notation is the set of symbols and representations used in mathematical expressions. It helps mathematicians write formulas, equations and complex calculations using a structured and standardized approach. Notation helps simplify complex calculations and ensures a universally accepted method of mathematical communication.

Types of Mathematical Notations:
1. Positional Notation- where the value of a digit depends on its position in a number like decimal system, etc.  

2. Scientific Notation– a way of expressing large or small numbers using powers of ten, for example – (6,20,000 can be written as 6.2 × 10^4).

3. Set Notation– used to define collections of elements. e.g. {1,2,3}.

4. Summation and Integral Notation– symbols like sigma (Σ) is commonly used in mathematics to represent summation.

What is Numeration?
According to Cambridge dictionary, numeration means, "a system for counting or numbering things". Numeration refers to the system or method used to represent numbers. It determines how numbers are structured, organized and classified in different counting systems. In simple words, it is the method by which numbers are expressed in a structured way, whether in digits or words. It covers various number systems and formats, allowing numbers to be written, understood and processed efficiently. For example, following are some forms of numeration for value '123’:
1. in Standard Form (in Figures)- 123.
2. in Word Form- One Hundred Twenty Three.
3. in Expanded Form- 100 + 20 + 3.
4. in Roman Numerals- CXXIII.


Note that, word form of numbers can also know by ‘word notation’, ‘number in word form’, ‘verbal numeral’, ‘numbers in words’ and  ‘word representation of numbers’.


Various numeration systems have evolved throughout history to facilitate calculations and communication across civilizations. Each numeration system follows a distinct pattern for counting and expressing numbers, making mathematical operations easier depending on the context. Some types of numeration systems are as follows:
1. Hindu-Arabic Numeration System– the most commonly used system, based on ten digits (0, 1 ,2 ,3 ,4 ,5 ,6 ,7 ,8 ,9).

2. Roman Numeration System– uses letters like I, V, X, L, C, D, and M to represent numbers.

3. Binary Numeration System– used in computers, consisting of only two digits, ‘0’ and ‘1’.
