Concept of Face Value, Place Value & Place Value Charts
Hello Readers,
Well, understanding numbers goes beyond just recognizing digits; it involves knowing their Face Value and Place Value concepts, as they are essential for arithmetic, reasoning and competitive exams. Let’s explore these concepts in detail.
What is Face Value?
The Face Value of a digit in a number is simply the digit itself, irrespective of its position. It does not change based on placement within a number. For examples,
- In numeral 7,853, the face value of 8 is 8.
- In numeral 46, the face value of 4 is 4.
Thus, we can say that, the Face Value remains constant.
What is Place Value?
The Place Value of a digit depends on its position in the numeral. It is calculated by multiplying the digit by its positional value. So, it is also know by Local Value. For examples,
- In numeral 7,853, the place value of 8 is 800, as it is in the Hundreds place in the numeral (so, 8×100=800).
- In numeral 46, the place value of 4 is 40, as it is in the Tens place (so, 4×10=40).
Thus, Place Value or the Local Value change with position of the digit.

What is a Place Value Chart?
It is a visual tool that helps us to understand the value of digits within a number. It breaks down numbers into different positional values such as ones place, tens place, hundreds place, thousands place and beyond. It is also called Local Value Chart or System. These kind of charts simplifies number analysis and arithmetic operations, making calculations more intuitive. For example, numeral 5,473 can be expanded as,
= [ 5,000 + 400 + 70 + 3 ]
There are two commonly used place value systems- Indian Place Value System and International Place Value System.
Following are the Key Differences between them:
1. Grouping
Indian system groups digits in pairs after the first three (e.g., 23,45,678 where 678 are first three digits followed by pair of two digits), while International system groups digits in sets of three always (e.g., 2,345,678).
2. Naming of Large Numbers
Indian system uses Lakhs (i.e. 1,00,000), Crores (i.e. 1,00,00,000), while International system uses Hundred Thousands (for 100,000), Millions (for 1,000,000), Billions (for 1,000,000,000).
Which System to Use?
The Indian Place Value system is commonly used in India for accounting, government records and banking, while the International Place Value system is used globally in financial statements, business transactions and research.
Why Are These Concepts Important?
1. Essential for calculations like addition, subtraction and multiplication.
2. Helps in number comparisons and digit identification.
3. Important for reasoning and competitive exams.
4. Helps in reading and writing large numbers easily.
5. Improves calculation accuracy by breaking down numbers into simpler forms.
6. Essential for banking, accounting and competitive exams.
By mastering these concepts, students and aspirants can boost their numerical accuracy and problem-solving skills.
