1.
“Numbers are the basic units of mathematics”. Today we can`t imagine our
world without numbers as they are everywhere, from simple addition to biggest
calculations of quantum physics.

Indian Number System (which is also known by Indo-Arabic System) of numbers
have ten symbols called – ‘Digit’. These ten digits are 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9. It is important to note that, all digits except ‘0’ is called significant digit
while ‘0’ is called as insignificant digit.

A number can be expressed in two forms, in numeral numeration and in word
numeration. In numeral numeration we use digits of a number system, like
0,1,2,3, etc. digits of Indo-Arabic number system; or I, II, III, IV, V, etc.
digits of Roman number system. While in word numeration we write a numeral
value in words, like numeral 123 is written as, ‘One Hundred Three’ in word
numeration.

In a given number, the face value of a digit is equal to the digit itself. For
example, in numeration 66693, the face value of 9 is the 9 itself irrespective
of its place in the numeration.

The place value chart is a visual tool that helps us to understand the value of
a digit within a number. These kinds of chart simplify number analysis and
arithmetic operations, making calculations more intuitive. There are two
prominent systems for place value known as ‘International Place Value System’
and ‘Indian Place Value System’. Following charts and diagrams wills explain
about places in this chart along with the difference between Indian and
International place value systems:—

In a given number, the place value of the digit is the value obtained by
multiplication of its face value & its place value in the place value
chart. For example, the place value of 3 in numeral 5930 is 30 because,

face value of 3 = 3
The
place value of 3 in place value chart = 10
Now,
to get place value of 3 in given numeral,
=
(Face Value of 3) × (Place Value of 3 in Place Value Chart)
=
3×10
= 30.
Place
value is also known by name of local value.
